Is It Time to Remove Your Popcorn Ceiling? What Cape Coral Homeowners Should Know

By Bayside Drywall and Stucco LLC5 min read

Popcorn ceilings, also called acoustic or cottage cheese ceilings, were a popular finish in American homes from the 1950s through the 1980s. The texture was quick to spray on, hid imperfections in the drywall, and softened sound. Many Cape Coral homes built during those decades still have their original popcorn ceilings today.

Why Homeowners Remove It

The biggest reason is appearance. A smooth ceiling makes a room look current, reflects more light, and makes a space feel larger. There are practical reasons too:

  • Textured ceilings trap dust and cobwebs and are hard to clean.
  • Popcorn texture is difficult to repaint without it flaking or clumping.
  • Water stains and patches stand out and are hard to blend.
  • A smooth ceiling is easier to maintain for years to come.

Test Before Anyone Scrapes

Some popcorn ceiling textures made before the mid-1980s contain asbestos. You can't tell by looking at it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises leaving material that may contain asbestos undisturbed until it has been tested, because asbestos is only a hazard when fibers are released into the air.

If your home was built or remodeled before the mid-1980s, have a sample tested by an accredited lab before removal. If it tests positive, removal must be handled by a licensed asbestos abatement professional, not a general drywall crew.

What the Removal Process Looks Like

  • Protect the room. Furniture comes out or is covered, and floors and walls are sealed with plastic sheeting to contain dust.
  • Remove the texture. The ceiling is lightly misted and the texture is scraped off in sections.
  • Repair and skim. Exposed seams, nail pops, and dings are repaired, then the ceiling gets a skim coat of joint compound.
  • Sand and prime. The surface is sanded smooth and primed so it's ready for paint.

How Long Does It Take?

Timing depends on the size of the room, the condition of the drywall underneath, and how long the skim coat needs to dry, which can take longer in Southwest Florida's humidity. We'll give you a realistic schedule with your quote so you know what to expect before we start.
